5 Ways to Make Orchids Part of Your St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

March 17, 2015

St. Patrick’s Day isn’t a holiday that typically inspires much decorating or gift giving. While you might see a festive wreath or some decorative shamrocks, St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t tend to get as much attention as other casual holidays, like Valentine’s Day or the Fourth of July. However, with spring on the horizon, we think this underappreciated March holiday offers the perfect opportunity to say goodbye to winter by getting in the spirit. And what better way to celebrate than with orchids?

Here are five ways you can make an orchid part of a festive St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

1. Brighten Up Your Office Space

If your office has really felt the brunt of a cold and dark winter, St. Patrick’s Day can be the perfect occasion to welcome spring back into the office. Bring in a bright and cheery plant as a way to say “top of the morning!” to your coworkers.

2. Decorate Your Orchid’s Pot

There’s no reason your orchid can’t dress up for the holidays, too! Tie a green ribbon around the pot or stick on some shamrock stickers to keep the pinching leprechauns at bay. You could even stick a “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” button in the potting mulch to give your orchid a sassy personality for the day. Feeling really creative? Transform your orchid pot into a “pot o’ gold,” complete with chocolate gold coins.

3. Incorporate Your Orchid in a Holiday Display

Orchids are great for adding height to a display – whether it’s a centerpiece for your dining room table or a decorative addition to your mantle. Find an orchid in a green ceramic pot to tie in with a St. Patrick’s Day-themed tablecloth. Or, string a shamrock garland across your mantle and let your orchid be a festive focal point.

4. Play With Leprechauns

Mischievous leprechauns are one of the most fun ways to decorate for St. Patrick’s Day. Hide figurines among your plant leaves or prop a cute stuffed leprechaun up against your plant’s pot. If you’re feeling especially spirited, you could even incorporate a rainbow and make your orchid the leprechaun’s treasure to be found at the end.

5. Give a Thoughtful Gift

An unexpected St. Patrick’s Day gift is a great way to brighten someone’s day. You already know that orchids make great gifts, and you can use some of the decorative pot suggestions above to make the gesture a little more spirited and personalized. Bake up some shamrock cookies to give alongside your orchid make your recipient feel even more special.

St. Patrick’s Day offers a great opportunity to have a little fun after an especially cold winter. By making orchids part of your celebration, you can add a little beauty and creativity among all the green.
