Why More People Are Choosing Plant Parenthood

April 6, 2021

Houseplants are having a breakout moment among Millennials and Gen Z. And while houseplants and indoor gardening aren’t new concepts, plant retailers everywhere saw a big boom in sales in 2020. Why are more people making the leap into plant parenthood? Because plants are amazing, of course!

But seriously, plants bring value to everyday life, whether they’re common houseplants like the spider plant or the variegated unicorns of houseplants. The advent of coronavirus kept more people indoors, and during these dark times, they craved more beauty and started filling their homes with plants.

Trending houseplant types include:

  • Succulents
  • ZZ plant
  • Peace lily
  • Air plants
  • Orchids
  • Philodendron
  • Snake plant
  • Spider plant
  • Money tree

3 reasons people want indoor plants

During the pandemic, people have searched “Buy Plants” on Google more than “Buy Shoes.” I don’t know about you, but we didn’t leave the house much, so this makes sense. Here are three reasons why more people are turning into plant parents.

Plants are grounding

Taking care of plants provides an oftentimes much-needed break in the day. They’re good for your mental health — it’s science! Potting and repotting plants keeps you connected to the earth, and the soil you’re working with has been proven to contain a natural antidepressant. Mycobacterium vaccae may stimulate the production of serotonin (the happy hormone) in your brain.

Plus, when you're taking care of your plants, you're not looking at a screen. Connecting with nature is healing.

Fill caregiver need

Many people are natural caregivers, and in a time where we weren’t allowed to hug or even see our loved ones, many turned to taking care of plant babies. Not to mention, Millennials and Gen Z are waiting longer to have children and are instead nesting with plants until they’re ready. Nurturing a small plant and fulfilling its needs can be very rewarding. It’s also a great learning experience. Bring on the green thumb!

Aesthetics

Now that everyone is spending more time at home, they’re looking for ways to change the view and freshen up a space. Home offices have become urban jungles or have a nice plant shelf featured in Zoom meeting backgrounds. Living rooms are being punched up with plant-heavy mantels, bookshelves, TV stands and anywhere else a plant will fit.

Surrounding yourself with nature’s green leaves has healing effects. Researchers have found that bringing plants indoors can reduce stress, increase pain tolerance, and improve productivity. They also add to our overall feeling of comfort and improved well-being.

Add to your houseplant collection

Do you really need another houseplant? We say yes! It's self-care! When the world around us is in turmoil, it’s natural to want to surround yourself with beauty. Houseplants bring nature indoors and provide a lasting beauty that trinkets may not. As your collection grows, so will your love of plants. All it takes is one to start, and plants make the world a happier place.
