Common Causes of Orchid “Bud Blast”

March 3, 2011

Despite the hearty nature of the Phalaenopsis orchid, some new owners can still run into a problem referred to as “bud blast,” where growing buds dry out and fall off of their plants prior to opening. While this problem can seem disheartening, especially to someone who doesn’t always have the greenest thumb, the reasons behind it are usually pretty simple to identify and remedy.

Water Level

The most common cause of bud blast is that your Phalaenopsis orchid isn’t getting the proper hydration. The Phalaenopsis orchid doesn’t have the same ability for large quantity water storage as some other species of orchids so it can be easily affected by drought. Ideally, your potting bark will feel just slightly damp all the time – the Just Add Ice watering system for Phalaenopsis orchids seems to provide the perfect amount of water to keep your orchids properly hydrated.

Temperature and Humidity

Changing temperatures and humidity levels in your home can have a big impact on your orchids’ health. Your Phalaenopsis orchids will have difficulty thriving in areas of your home where they will be shocked by sudden temperature changes. Do your best to keep them out of direct sunlight and away from the possibility of cold drafts as the seasons change.

Fertilizer Use

During the growing season your orchid needs to be kept well fertilized, but during bloom the needs aren’t nearly as high.  Weekly doses of your favorite fertilizer are recommended during growing season, but that can be cut back to once per month during the winter months or blooming season for ideal orchid health.

Bud blast is a pretty common problem and shouldn’t discourage the Phalaenopsis owner in any way. Just take the time to go over your orchid care checklist, then identify and remove the cause of the problem. Once you’ve done away with any minor care issues, you should be able to appreciate full and healthy orchid blooms rather than fret over dried buds.
