Just Add Ice Orchids Is Leader in Green Growing Technology

May 24, 2011

In many parts of the world, delicate orchid species have become endangered or extinct. Sometimes a rare species has been over-collected by commercial orchid hunters, but primarily species are lost to habitat destruction as humans expand into previously pristine wilderness areas. To prevent the loss of additional orchid species, orchid foundations in several countries now sponsor orchid seed and protocorm banks. Several projects are currently attempting to rebuild endangered orchid populations or reintroduce extinct species into their native environments by planting orchids cultivated at orchid banks. Protecting the eco-systems in which the world’s most exotic flowers thrive is essential to orchid survival and a cause championed here at Just Add Ice Orchids.

At Just Add Ice Orchids we have made it our mission to employ green technology and sustainable production practices that protect the environment and minimize our impact on it. Adopting state-of-the-art plant production methods developed in the Netherlands where sustainability is a top priority, our orchid production facility in Oberlin, Ohio is modeled after Holland’s most advanced green production plants. Just Add Ice Phalaenopsis Orchids are grown in an eco-friendly environment using highly-efficient growing techniques, water conservation and a sustainable heat source.

  • 100% of the water used in our growing process is recycled and reused.
  • Rain water collection adds 1.5 million gallons of fresh water to our water retention ponds for every 1 inch of rain received, eliminating our dependence on other water sources in times of drought.
  • Wood boilers fueled by refuse from local tree removal companies provide a sustainable heat source and have eliminated our dependence on natural gas.
  • Use of a sustainable heat source has allowed us to drastically reduce environmentally-harmful emissions.
  • We use only recycled plastics and cardboards in our production and distribution processes.
