Preparing Your Orchid for Exhibition (Part 2)

December 26, 2012

orchid exhibition tipsToday, we will continue our discussion of several other things that you can do to make your Phalaenopsis orchid look more impressive before an exhibition.

  1. Check for foreign matter, webs, potting medium and other materials in the flowers. Remove them by gently blowing them off.
  2. Staking does not only enhance the presentation of your orchid; it can also provide protection during travel. When you are transporting your orchid, you need to stake the flowers more elaborately, so that they will not rub or bump against anything. You can also stake the entire plant if necessary. After you have arrived at the venue, remove the heavier stakes and inspect the positions of the lighter ones. It is advisable that you begin staking your orchid when the inflorescence is growing instead of doing it at the last minute. The string, wire, bamboo, or twist ties should not overwhelm or detract from your orchid. You can make them look more subtle by cutting their ends.
  3. It is also a good idea to include labels in your display. The labels can be taped or hot-glued onto the wooden stakes. They should be clear and readable, and not of a striking color that distracts the viewer from the orchid.
  4. One great way to display your orchid is to put it in a basket and cover the holes around it with sheet moss or Spanish moss, giving the basket a woods-themed appearance. You can also add ferns or other small plants to reinforce the theme, but make sure they do not take attention away from the orchid. Look at displays from previous exhibitions for more ideas.
