Protect Your Orchids from Seasonal Changes

October 29, 2012

Orchid Season ChangesPhalaenopsis orchids need some tender loving care when the seasons change. While these exotic plants thrive in our homes and offices with minimal care, seasonal changes in light, temperature and humidity can adversely affect Phalaenopsis orchids. When fall temperatures start dropping and we crank up the heat, it is a good idea to check on your orchids. You may need to adjust the environmental conditions where you display your Phalaenopsis orchids or move them to a healthier location.

The following environmental conditions may affect your orchids’ health when the seasons change:

  • Light. Phalaenopsis orchids require plenty of bright but indirect light. As the sun rides lower in the sky and the days grow shorter, you may need to move your orchids to a sunnier room during the day or place orchids closer to lamps to augment the amount of natural light your plants receive.
  • Temperature. Phalaenopsis orchids thrive in daytime temperatures of 65 to 80 degrees F. and nighttime temperatures of 60 to 70 degrees F. Sudden changes in temperature can harm Phalaenopsis orchids, causing them to lose their buds and flowers. Avoid exposing your orchid to warm drafts from heating vents or frigid drafts from exterior doors. If you use ceiling fans to help circulate the air in your home, avoid placing your orchids directly in the path of strong air currents.
  • Humidity. Forced air heat and dry winter air can drive indoor humidity below the 55 percent to 75 percent ideal for Phalaenopsis orchids. You can increase indoor humidity by running a humidifier, placing orchid pots on a shallow tray of water-covered pebbles or misting orchid leaves (mist in the morning so leaves can dry before nightfall).
