Celebrate with Green Orchids

You don’t have to settle for green carnations to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Decorate with distinctive style with green orchids!


We usually think of green as the color of leaves, not flowers. But there are several orchids whose flowers are green, and they are coveted for their uniqueness. They can range from deep evergreen to a vivid translucent lime green with a whole spectrum of verdant hues in between.

All of the green orchids are striking, though the shapes of the sepal, leaves, lips, and foliage vary. Some varieties are predominantly green, while others have merely a hint. The variety of shades and shapes make them an orchid enthusiast’s dream.

Phalaenopsis orchids can boast several green flowers. Among them, the Yellow Treasure hybrid is very sought after with its light yellow-green flowering. This genus developed in Asia and Australia. Big Leaf Orchids has a list of other green Phals with names like Phal. Green Jewel, Phal. Mystik Lemon Drop and Phal. African Queen 'Zulu Emerald'

The genus Platanthera has a variety of green orchids from across North America and in Europe that grow on a tall, upright spike.

Green Cymbidium orchids are favored for bridal bouquets, adding lovely green color of a floral variety rather than from foliage. Native to China and Japan, there are many hybrids of the Cymbidium orchid.

The Paphiopedilum, also known as slipper orchid, found mainly in China and Vietnam, has several varieties of green orchids.

Aeranthes, primarily found in Madagascar have large star shaped flowers, including the Shooting Stars orchid, Aeranthes Grandiose. This hybrid has won numerous awards from the American Orchid Society.

Dendrobium Burana Jade is one of the hybrids originating in Thailand. Abundant lemony green flowers grow on stalks that can reach nearly 3 feet in height.
