4 Ways to Look Amazing on Your Next Zoom Call

August 11, 2020

As the country continues to largely work from home mid-pandemic, you may be looking for a way to spruce up your surroundings while you take virtual meeting after virtual meeting. Short of just turning your camera off (which is OK sometimes!), we’ve found four proven techniques to make your future Zoom calls a success.

4 ways to look great on your Zoom calls

When you’re comfortable in your surroundings, you’re the best version of yourself. Here are four easy ways to make sure you’re looking and feeling your best for your next video call.

Gussy up

You don’t want to be remembered for looking a little frazzled on your conference calls. A professional appearance will go a long way with your clients and co-workers. Take a little time for self-care: do your hair, dab on a little makeup or lipstick, do your nails, put on your favorite blouse (we won’t tell if you keep your pajama pants on!), and dust off a pair of earrings. When you look great, you feel great!

Don’t fight the light

Place your computer camera in front of a window and face the window while you’re on the call. Take advantage of any natural light you have coming into your room, however, do not sit with your back to a window because it will backlight you and your background will be drowned out. If you don’t have any windows, try placing a lamp in front of you in the same way that you’d face a window. If you can use a light fixture above and in front of you, all the better.

Fix your perspective

No one wants to look up your nose or down at the top of your head. Make sure your camera is eye level and in a comfortable position for you to look straight at your co-workers, just like you would in a regular meeting. Consider investing in computer or monitor stands to elevate your camera, or if you’re in a pinch, grab a stack of books.

Check your background

A manicured background not only makes you feel better, but it also gives your fellow callers something pleasing to look at. Make sure you don’t have anything in your background that may look like it’s sticking out of your head. Clear any clutter that may be lying around and generally check to make sure everything is tidy.

If you have some spare end tables or shelves, consider decorating them with little colorful knickknacks or even some plants. Orchids and anthuriums are air-purifying and they make a colorful statement. If you’re looking to go a little more low-key, try foliage plants. They add interesting shapes and patterns to your backdrop.

Successful Video Calls

Follow these four simple steps to ensure your next video call is a success. If it looks good enough, people may even think you’re using a pre-made Zoom background!
