A Little Care Goes a Long Way for Just Add Ice Orchids

May 4, 2011

Just Add Ice Orchids are so beautiful that people can’t help loving them. With large butterfly-shaped blossoms perched on gracefully curving stems, Phalaenopsis Orchids are among the most beautiful of the more than 25,000 orchid species so far discovered on Earth. These stunning orchid plants are available in a profusion of colors, both solid colored and exotically patterned. Their exquisite beauty makes Just Add Ice Orchids easy to love.

Unfortunately, it is possible to smother these exotic flowers with a little too much love. First-time orchid owners have a tendency to think that if a little of something is good for their orchid plant, then a lot of something will be even better! That kind of wrong thinking can wreak havoc on Phalaenopsis Orchids. These plants actually profit from a bit of benign neglect.

New Phalaenopsis Orchid owners often kill their plants with kindness. Too much water or fertilizer, while beneficial in small, controlled quantities, can cause your Just Add Ice Orchid plant to fail and die. In fact, over-watering is the most frequent cause of orchid failure. While Phalaenopsis Orchids are one of the hardiest orchid species, their roots will turn to mush if they are forced to sit in constantly damp soil for extended periods of time. To ensure the optimum health of your orchid plant, the plant medium should be allowed to dry out between waterings.

One of the reasons Just Add Ice Orchids are such a great choice for first-time orchid growers is that they require only minimal care and minimal watering. As their name says, you just add ice – 3 ice cubes per week – to the orchid pot and your orchid will receive the correct amount of water it needs to thrive as the ice cubes slowly melt.
