Is Your Just Add Ice Orchid Getting Too Much Water?

July 13, 2011

Just Add Ice Orchids were developed to be watered with just 3 ice cubes once a week. As the ice cubes melt, the plant receives the perfect amount of water required for healthy orchid growth. However, many orchid owners make the mistake of watering their Phalaenopsis Orchid as frequently as they water their other house plants. This can be disastrous for your Just Add Ice Orchid and cause it to fail. Over-watering is the single greatest cause of orchid failure.

How can you tell if your Just Add Ice Orchid is getting too much water? Follow these steps:

  1. Stick a toothpick into the orchid’s pot and pull it out. If you see particles of potting mix clinging to the toothpick, the growing medium is too wet.
  2. Stop watering your orchid and thoroughly inspect the plant.
  3. Carefully remove your Just Add Ice Orchid from its pot and inspect the roots of the plant. Healthy roots will be white and have a crisp appearance. If the roots are brown or mushy, they are rotting from constantly sitting in too much water.
  4. Trim off any damaged roots and repot your orchid in fresh growing medium that has been specifically formulated for orchids.
  5. Add just 3 ice cubes to your freshly potted orchid pot and sign up for our free weekly watering reminders on the Just Add Ice Orchids website. Just Add Ice Orchids only need to be watered once a week and just 3 ice cubes should be added to your orchid’s pot on designated watering days.

When Just Add Ice Orchids receive the proper amounts of light and humidity and are displayed in an area that is kept at the proper temperature, these hardy Phalaenopsis Orchids should require only the recommended weekly watering with 3 ice cubes.
