Decorate Your Orchid for a Berry Merry Holiday

December 2, 2011

Holiday Berry Decorating Project & Video

Total project time: 15 minutes

You will need:

  • 1 Just Add Ice Orchid
  • 1 festive ceramic pot or holiday tin
  • 1 sturdy holiday stem for each orchid stem
  • Wire cutters

Directions:

  1. Choose a festive ceramic pot, decorative holiday tin or solid color pot (silver, gold or other holiday color) that complements the color of your Just Add Ice Orchid. The decorative container should be as tall as or slightly taller than the interior grower pot in which your orchid is planted. Just Add Ice Orchids are double-potted when sold. To aid drainage and allow inspection of the plant’s roots, Just Add Ice Orchids are planted in a clear grower pot that is placed inside a more decorative exterior pot.
  2. To move your orchid into its new holiday pot, hold both the stem and stake and slowly pull the grower pot out of the exterior decorative pot. Lower the grower pot into the new pot.
  3. Using wire cutters, cut one holiday stem for each orchid stem. Holiday stems must be stiff and sturdy enough to support the orchid spike. Cut each stem the same height as the current stake. When measuring, remember that 3 to 4 inches of stem will need to extend below the soil surface to anchor the plant.
  4. Push the holiday stem firmly into the pot next to the current stake.
  5. Remove the clips from the plant stake one at a time and use them to attach the orchid stem to the holiday stem. Start at the base of the plant and move up so that the spike is constantly supported.
  6. Repeat if your orchid has more than one stem.
  7. Make sure the spike is fully supported by the holiday stem.
