Helpful Tips for Buying a Phalaenopsis Orchid

September 6, 2013

Danice--Kiwi-GreenMany orchid newbies have passed by the beautiful Phalaenopsis orchids in grocery stores, home improvement stores, etc. but opted to pass on by because they are intimated about the orchid’s growing regimen. Fear not!

We offer some helpful tips to use when selecting a Phalaenopsis orchid to buy.

Healthy Looking Blooms

Look for Phalaenopsis orchids that have healthy looking flowers with vibrant color that are strongly attached to the stalk of the plant. Additional buds on the orchid plant are a good thing as this means that more flowers are on the way.

Green, Vibrant Leaves

Only buy an orchid that has healthy green looking leaves. If the leaves are yellow, wilted, or brown, the plant is having some sort of problem.

Take a very close look at the leaves of the orchid plant. Look for tiny pests that may have invaded the plants environment. Some pests are difficult to see. Look for tiny spider like webs, brown spots, or areas on the leaves that are turning yellow. Any of these conditions are a result of spider mites or mealy bugs—these tiny pests like to hide on the underside of the leaves.

Stems Standing Tall

When buying an orchid plant, take a look at the stem or stems on the plant. Green stems that stand tall and are not droopy mean the plant is healthy.
