Decorate with Pantone’s Color of the Year: Living Coral

February 5, 2019

Surely you’ve heard the news by now: Pantone’s 2019 color of the year is Living Coral. Coral is a fun, not-quite-pink, not-quite-orange hybrid color that is great for adding a pop of color to your current decor scheme.

Whether you have the DIY bug or you simply want to accessorize with this hot new trend, we’ve got a few ideas for you!

Just Add Accents

If you have a good decor vibe going already, spruce it up with some on-trend color colors in your accent pieces, like a throw rug, blanket, or pillows. Change out your coasters to a coral color or swap a black picture frame for a coral one. If you’re decorating in the kitchen, look for coral colored utensils if you need to upgrade anyway. The bathroom is a great place for a beach theme with plenty of corals and blues. In your home office, put up a piece of artwork featuring this year’s signature color.

Just Add Paint

This idea might need to wait until the spring when you can DIY outside, but consider sanding and repainting a piece of furniture in your living room, like end tables or your entertainment center. A bright coral showpiece will serve as a focal point in the room and be the talk of all your guests. You can also choose to paint a wall with coral paint as an accent wall. Living Coral goes great with a light teal or turquoise for excellent contrast and complementing decor!

Just Add Ocean

Living Coral lends itself perfectly to beach or ocean themed decorating, whether you prefer your decor themes to be subtle or obvious. Crashing waves, seashells, and images of sea life (including coral, of course) combine to create a beach house vibe that lasts all year long. Make sure to source any previously-living beach decorations from sustainable and reputable sources.

Just Add Orchids

Support Coral Reefs

Shining a spotlight on the color of the year means investigating the importance of coral on our environment. Unfortunately, global coral reefs are dying due to mining, pollution, overfishing, and rising global temperatures, among other factors. A 2008 study estimated that nearly one fifth of the world’s coral reefs were gone and that less than half of coral reefs were in good health at the time. Many coral reefs are considered endangered, along with other marine life including many species of sea turtles, whales and dolphins, seals and sea lions, and sharks.

To help stop the damage to coral reefs and promote restoration and protection services, you can donate to important organizations including:

No gift is too small when people come together to help protect our planet’s beautiful and valuable wildlife and ecosystems.
