Mother’s Day Gift Idea: DIY with Orchids

April 25, 2024

If you love DIY projects and your mom enjoys the personalized touch of a hand-made gift, these Mother's Day orchid gift ideas are perfect! From a simple project that your kids, nieces or nephews can help with to a more complex one, you're sure to give Mom the most beautifully unique gift ever!

We know Mother’s Day is a fun day to give Mom a gift that has a lot of meaning, so we are excited to help you put together something sweet. If both projects are too much for you, buying your mom an orchid is a great way to still give her something meaningful, without having to do a DIY project.

Mother’s Day is observed on May 12th this year, so make sure you order your gift in time too!

Project 2: Mother's Day DIY Orchid Mount

This one is a bit more complex, but it's still easy enough for those who may not be quite as crafty.

Supplies:

  • Mount: Soak the wood overnight. Hardwoods that are rot-resistant, such as oak, are an ideal choice.
  • Wire to secure the orchid
  • Wire Cutters
  • Sphagnum Moss: This is the ideal medium for orchids because it allows the air to circulate.
  • Sterilized scissors for trimming the roots.
  • Mister: Your mom will want to mist the roots daily.

Directions

Step 1: Prepare the orchid. Remove the orchid from its pot along with any clips and orchid media. Using sterile scissors, trim the orchid’s roots and then mist them with cool water.

Step 2: Mount the Moss + Orchid. Press some of the moss onto the mount and then lay the orchid on the mount with the roots over the moss. Press more moss onto the top of the roots and then wrap the wire around the moss-covered roots a few times.

 That's it!
