Why You Should Keep Orchids in Your Home This Winter

December 16, 2014

When you picture an orchid, you probably think of brightly colored blooms in tropical locations. Though Phalaenopsis orchids do come in many tropical colors, Just Add Ice® Orchids are grown to bloom year round, meaning they can be enjoyed beyond the spring and summer months.

However, there are many more reasons to keep orchids in your home this winter than the simple fact that they’re still available in stores. Here are five reasons why you should have an orchid in your home this winter.

1. Nature is entering a resting period.

As leaves fall from tree branches and flower blooms whither, the outside world takes a break from lush vegetation and beautiful gardens. Since you won’t be experiencing flowers blooming in nature, it’s a great time to have thriving blooms in your home. An orchid can help to brighten up the dark and gloom of the winter months.

2. Orchids come in many seasonal colors.

Even though the bright pinks and purples of spring and summer months are most common, Just Add Ice® Orchids come in a wide variety of colors. For example, you can find winter whites that complement your seasonal décor.

3. Orchids make great additions to holiday centerpieces.

You can design a unique holiday centerpiece with blooming orchids. Visit a local craft store to find holly leaves or garland and build a festive display with your orchid as the main visual draw.

4. Brighten up your time indoors.

Since most people spend less time outside during the winter months, having an orchid inside your home can help alleviate the winter blues. Research has shown flowers can help trigger positive emotions, so filling your home with orchids this winter may actually improve your quality of life.

5. Orchids thrive in warmer temperatures.

It might be colder outside, but the temperature in your home is likely to be kept even warmer than in the summer. The optimal temperature for an orchid to thrive is between 65 to 80 degrees during the day, so your heated home can provide a great environment for your orchid to bloom. However, too much dry heat can have negative effects on your orchid, so make sure you watch the humidity level in your home.

Don’t wait for warmer outside temperatures to start keeping orchids in your home. The winter is just as good of a time—maybe even better!—to purchase your first orchid. It might be getting colder and darker outside, but having an orchid inside will make every day just a little brighter.
